Rules of horse syndication are very specific in New Zealand and is a source of frustration. This is best explained in a letter by John C. Allan to Friday Flash April 14 2000 Accordingly I obtained from the New Zealand Racing Authority their Code of Practice with respect to syndication. Our proposal was to establish a pool of money with which we would buy, lease, race and, where appropriate, sell horses both in New Zealand and overseas (the better performers), under professional management, in accordance with modern business requirements. This concept excited a large number of intelligent, successful in their own field, logical-thinking people, who are familiar with the procedures and requirements of such an exercise. Horrors !!! This forward-thinking practice is expressly prohibited by NZ racing as a “greenfields” promotion. Needless to say, I have sought a view on the legality of this prohibition from the Department of Commerce and propose to pursue the matter further on receipt of its reply. Is it any wonder the racing industry is in the doldrums when it is managed by the sort of mentality which seeks to put up negative, restrictive barriers on an industry which plays such an important part in this nation’s economy.” It is well accepted internationally that New Zealand has a good gene pool with excellent weather and pastures. We also have excellent horsemanship. Our bloodstock is in demand and this will increase. Auckland remains untapped as a source of future horse owning syndicates and once the industry goes through its “ reorganization” we will see an increase in the number of young owners and trainers in the industry. |
